1D Waveform Modeling

Map of the southern Korean Peninsula and its surrounding seas, showing the locations of the events (red circles) and KMA (squares) and KIGAM (triangles) stations. The stations used in this study are shown as blue shapes. The background colour indicates the elevation and the dark grey dashed lines are the boundaries of the major tectonic regions.

(a) Estimated P- and S-wave velocity models at each modeling step. Error bars and parameter names are superimposed on model plots. Here P1, P2, P3, and P4 indicate the P-wave velocities of the upper, middle, lower crust, and mantle, respectively. The same nomenclature is used for the S-wave velocity and thickness. (b) Histograms for the model parameters described in (a). Frequency histogram (lines and shade) and search boundary (dotted lines) are shown using the same colours used in (a).

Comparison of the observed (black) and synthetic (red) waveforms for all event-station pairs. The synthetic waveforms are calculated using the final 1D model. The number at the beginning of each trace denotes the variance reduction (%) of the two waveforms.

(a) Location map of the stations and events used for three tectonic regions. The ray paths with blue, red, and green lines are used for analysis of the Gyeonggi Massif, Okcheon Belt and Gyeongsang Basin, respectively. (b) Plots of three velocity models with 1 ¥ò error.
